Filling empty windows
In the autumn of 2023, as part of Artwave’s 30th anniversary, Windows of Wonder, a grassroots project exploring meanwhile use, brought together 23 artists and makers in Lewes, East Sussex, to create a landmark trail of 19 installations in empty windows around the town centre.

Following Artwave, the trail of windows continued on through October, in tandem with Wonder a sister project held at the historic Fitzroy House. Both projects were generously supported in ways too detailed to mention here; but you can find out more about the project’s aims and benefits, by clicking on the button below.
‘Meanwhile Use’ offers a low risk, high impact response to offsetting the blight of empty widows, whilst encouraging community opportunities to explore imaginative and participatory placemaking. Initiatives continue around the town, most notably at the bottom of Station St, a key pedestrian entrance to the town centre, where an empty double fronted premises is being used for rolling installations organised by The Makers Directory, Visit Lewes, and The Climate Hub.
